Antifa, BLM, Alt-Right. It’s all identity politics.

“People who think with their epidermis, genitalia, skin colour or their clan are the problem to begin with. One does not banish this specter by invoking it. If I would not vote against someone on the grounds of ‘race’ or ‘gender’ alone, then by the exact same token I would not cast a vote in his or her favor for the identical reason. Yet see how this obvious question makes fairly intelligent people say the most alarmingly stupid things.” – Christopher Hitchens

Concerning Charlottesville according to the worlds media, its seems cut and dry. A group of evil Neo-Nazis, the “Alt-right” organise a disgusting protest, are rightly and justly challenged by well meaning anti-facist protesters. One of the disgusting Fascists then gets into his car, and mows down the anti-fascists, resulting in the tragic death of a young woman.

A sign that fascism and Nazism, the KKK and the racist death squads that have been waiting patiently in the wings are now rampant in the USA. They have permeated every corner of society. The president is fascist, his cabinet is fascist, elements of the media are fascists. Hell if you don’t agree with that, then you sir, are a fascist.

As with everything in life it is not completely that black and white, pardon the expression. Firstly, it was a march of 500 people belonging to the far right. 500 people out of 323 million. German Socialist party rallies of 1943 it was not. Lets not get hysterical. Lets have some perspective.

I will agree with them that the opinions being espoused by the right on that march are cretinous and should be condemned. Skin colour is never a basis for a strong argument. I think every sane person on the planet will also agree that running people over in a car, no matter the provocation or your warped reasoning, is beneath contempt. The fact someone died makes it a million times more vile, but the act itself is evil enough.

Where it starts getting a little bit grey in my eyes is where there is no wrong doing of any kind on the other side. Where the far left are not exactly the same as the far right in their approach and narrative, just opposite sides of the same boring, irrelevant argument.

You see, when it comes down to it, what happened in Charlottesville, was an attempt on both sides to silence the other. One side tried to silence the other with sticks, bottles of urine, and rocks. One warped individual then abhorrently silenced one of that counter group forever using a car.

Let me be crystal clear here, just in case there is any ambiguity. I am not justifying that retaliation. At all. As far as i am concerned that piece of filth that drove into those people is no different at all from the Islamic terrorists in Spain yesterday. To copy a well trodden meme – “Stop killing people you twats”.

But the fact remains that the people on the march from the far right were perfectly within the law and their own freedoms, to have that march. To speak freely. No matter how warped or vile we find it. The counter protesters have no god damn right to try and shut them up with sticks, bottles of piss and rocks.

Freedom of speech is an absolute necessity in a modern society. There is a reason we allow people to openly voice their opinions, no matter the subject. Because if people don’t feel they can get their point across with words. They do it with bombs, cars, knives and guns.

In addition if their argument is so stupid, so vile, so abhorrent, let them come out from the shadows so we can see it for what it is. Then simple debate will see them off. Words. Not rocks. Not cars.

Now lets look at the reaction to it all. The media would have you believe that groups like Antifa and BLM are the good guys, and when compared to the far right are as different as night and day.

I think they are all the same.

They are groups that thrive on the idea of collectivism. They all band around a particular quality or feature that makes them a group.

In Charlottesville for example, the “Alt right” marched through the town, chanting “white lives matter”. They are united in purpose and belief. The Alt-right firmly believe the white race is under threat. That is being discriminated against. That it is their skin colour that unites them, that only by banding together based purely on their skin colour can the ills of the world be solved.

BLM march in Tulsa in 2016. They chant “black lives matter”. They are united in purpose and belief. BLM firmly believe the black race is under threat. That is being discriminated against. That it is their skin colour that unites them, and that by banding together purely based on their skin colour can the ills of the world be solved.

Now. whether you believe in the cause one side or the other, or none at all is irrelevant. They believe it. But the point I’m making is they are a result of one another. Like a lump of the same clay split into two. Their outlook is the same, their need of identity politics is the same. They just shout about different colours of skin being the oppressed.

One is vilified in the media. The other is put on a pedestal.

So in Charlottesville the Alt-right kitted themselves out in shields and body armour and clubs. One could say they were ready for violence. And there was from their side.

Also in Charlottesville ANTIFA and BLM were kitted out in shields and body armour and sticks. One could say they were ready for violence. And their was from their side. Just as there have been many times before.

Both were seeking to push their side of the argument through violence. Both felt that since “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, that they better kit out with sticks and stones.

One is vilified in the press and the other put on a pedestal.

Lets be honest though. They are exactly the same. So actually, The Donald, for once, was not too far off the mark. And the media are the fake news.

There is something here that both the left and right need to accept. The first is that people should be allowed to speak their views, as long as it doesn’t promote violence or worse, free from the threat of violence in retaliation to what they say. That’s what free speech is.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,” – Evelyn Beatrice Hall

Both sides need to accept that you are going to hate certain things that are being said. But that doesn’t give you the right to try and shut them up through force, cars, throwing faeces or by punching them.

The right by the way are just as guilty of this – Free speech goes out the window if an Islamist is calling for Sharia law. “SHUT THEM DOWN” they cry. Yes its vile, yes its a contradiction to what we hold dear in the western world. But unless they are calling for westerners heads, or violence against infidels they too have free speech.

And leftists. I’m sorry but you cant punch a Nazi. Not even a little punch. Stop punching Nazis. They get to speak. As long as they are not calling for the death of Muslims, or Jews or black people, or anyone else. They get freedom of speech.

Its universal like that. See the alternative is always violence. The alternative is giving the state powers to control what you can and can not say. Then you are silenced too.

You don’t want to give up that freedom. Not for the sake of avoiding being angered once in a while, by a bunch of people on both sides of the argument, obsessed with the colour of their own skin.
